misfolds (ii)

In the first iteration of misfolds, Dawes examined proteins and their links to different degenerative diseases, after discovering the incorrect folding of proteins in large numbers is the root cause of dementia, and directly linked to memory loss. Dawes deconstructed the paper origami box, fold by fold, and made a series of woodblock prints for each. She then deliberately misfolded each print and then hung in their unfolded state, in a cluster of disorder.

In misfolds ii, Dawes used reclaimed timber from Thors to reference its inherent memory by printing all the scuff and saw marks, missing chunks and nail heads. The unforeseen difficulty in printing from a prickly and uneven surface of the timber gave voice to the emotions of a patient in the early stages of dementia.

The prints were then misfolded and assembled into small compositions.

The works were exhibited in the group exhibition, Carved, at the Mixing Room Gallery from August 2 to September 17 2022.
